Year one have returned with enthusiasm, curiosity and an eagerness to learn and it is simply a pleasure to see! Over the next half term we will be continuing our theme of ‘Houses and Homes’ through our Geography topic ‘The street beneath my feet’ and exploring the local area, local housing; identifying property types, building structures and local landscapes. We will build on this within provision by continuing our sketching skills learnt last half term. The children seem to have a real natural flair for art and again fantastic attention to detail.
In mathematics, we will be continuing with our addition and subtraction using both objects and number lines. Some children will explore patterns using tens and ones and in addition to number lines, explore using 100 squares. Also our continued learning of part whole models will be carried through this half term, before moving on to 2d and 3d shape naming, shape properties and construction of shape, patterns and models. In English, we will be exploring Diwali, Bonfire Night, and fiction/non-fiction texts; Peace at Last, The street beneath my feet, A planet full of plastic, Clem and Crab. Throughout the half term we will be supporting the children to segment and blend words to read them (as underpinned by our Essential Letters and Sounds Phonic teaching) and segmenting for spelling when writing. Please continue to support this at home little and often. Also continuing to practise weekly ‘harder to spell’ words as sent home.
In Science, we are continuing with our Materials topic. Again the children are thoroughly engaged with this and are using some great scientific language when making predictions and drawing conclusions from activities and experiments carried out so far.
In the past, I have offered 1-1 opportunities for me to model reading with your child, sharing of maths strategies and or supporting spelling for writing or writing sentences etc. If you would like more information on this or would in fact like to arrange a 1-1 session with me please email y1@coit.sheffield.sch.uk Thank you Mrs Maxton
